Mooresville man finds trusted spine surgeon, pain relief in Richmond
When it comes to doctors dealing with his joint and spine issues John Wright does his homework. It was his research on the internet that brought him all the way to Reid Orthopedics in Richmond from Mooresville he said.
“He carries the title of a doctor but he’s like a family member who cares about you as well as your health” Wright said of Hon Vien D.O. Reid orthopedic surgeon who performed an upper spine procedure on Wright last year. Wright said he is still following up with Dr. Vien and may need more surgical intervention in the future for a lower back issue related to an injury more than 20 years ago involving his spine and hips.
Wright was not happy with care he received previously in Indianapolis and remembers laying on his couch in pain and using a notebook computer to research caregivers. All it took for him was to see Reid Health web site videos featuring Dr. Vien for him to decide where he wanted to go.
His wife Holly drove him over for his initial appointment because he said he was in so much pain he could hardly hold his head up. In his appointment he said he had many questions. “I said I just need for you to answer some questions. I could tell he was a very humble person” Wright said.
“I’d love to have him (Dr. Vien) as a neighbor.”
After only one appointment and conversation with Dr. Vien Wright said he immediately was comfortable and decided he wanted Dr. Vien to do his surgery as soon as possible. At first that was going to have to be a few weeks out.
Dr. Vien said when he first saw Wright it was clear that other treatments were not working. “He came in with severe neck and arm pain. Therapy anti-inflammatories and pain medications were not working. He could no longer live with his pain.”
An MRI showed severe degenerative disc disease and nerve compressions at two levels Dr. Vien said.
Wright was impressed with how quickly the team was able to get him in after that first appointment. “On the way home I got a call that there had been a cancellation” he said. Within days his surgery was done and he was recovering. More than a year later he is still following up with Dr. Vien and anticipating additional procedures in the future.
Besides the skill Wright made it clear that the personal rapport with his surgeon was vital for him to put his care into their hands. “He’s just down to earth” he said. “I’d love to have him as a neighbor.”
