Expert Surgical Care at Reid Health General Surgeons

At Reid Health, our dedicated board-certified general surgeons help patients throughout East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio achieve successful outcomes at the General Surgery Center. They also treat patients in the Wound Healing Center.

Our goal is to help you return to your daily activities as soon as possible after surgery. To that end, our surgeons use minimally invasive robotic and laparoscopic methods to speed your recovery and reduce the risk of post-surgical pain and complications compared with traditional, open surgeries. Additionally, our general surgeons partner with the Reid Perioperative Clinic to further improve your experience and minimize recovery time.

Minimally invasive surgery means surgeons complete the procedure with few or no incisions. Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery in which a lighted telescope with a camera — called a laparoscope — is inserted through the belly button to look inside the body. Other incisions may be necessary to collect diagnostic samples and treat issues like tumors.

da Vinci Surgical System: Advanced Robotics at Reid Health

One of the most advanced approaches to surgery available, the da Vinci Surgical System allows surgeons at Reid Health to perform complex surgical procedures with greater accuracy and more precision than traditional approaches.

Learn more about this robotic technique and how it helps with various surgeries we perform for patients in East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio.

What is the da Vinci Surgical System?

The da Vinci Surgical System features robotic arms, special tools, and a surgical console outfitted with sophisticated computer software.

Throughout a procedure, your surgeon sits at the console and views the surgical site via high-definition, 3D imaging. Using specialized controls, your surgeon moves robotic arms, which hold very small surgical instruments and allow for finer movements than what the human hand is capable of.

Your surgeon is in control the entire time and can adapt as needed to perform your procedure effectively.

Benefits of the da Vinci Surgical System

Reid's general surgeons and surgical specialists perform minimally invasive procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System because of its many benefits to patients, which include:

· Fewer and smaller incisions, which allows for less internal scarring

· Greater accuracy

· Potentially shorter recoveries and less pain after surgery

How Reid surgeons use the da Vinci Surgical System

Reid offers da Vinci surgeries in several areas, including gynecologic, urologic, thoracic, and general procedures.

General surgery

At the Reid General Surgery Center, our board-certified surgeons have experience in many areas, including hernia repair, gallbladder removal, and gastrointestinal procedures. Whenever possible, they opt for minimally invasive methods, including da Vinci robotic procedures.

Gynecologic surgeries

Reid OB/GYN offers several surgeries using the da Vinci Surgical System. If you're experiencing pelvic prolapse or abdominal pain and bleeding, you may need one of the following procedures:

· Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus

· Sacrocolpopexy: Surgery to repair pelvic prolapse

Urologic surgeries

Comprehensive urological care at Reid addresses diseases and disorders impacting urinary system function. We treat bladder and kidney concerns and prostate cancer using the da Vinci Surgical System. Surgeries include:

· Prostatectomy: Removal of the prostate

· Partial nephrectomy: Removal of a portion of one kidney

· Pyeloplasty: Removal of a blockage between the kidney and ureter, the tube that carries urine to the bladder

Thoracic surgery

Thoracic concerns, such as a suspicious lung mass, mediastinal tumors, or lung cancer, may warrant surgical treatment. Procedures available at Reid using the da Vinci Surgical System include:

· Robotic lobectomy: Removal of a portion of the lobe

· Thoracic lymph node dissection: Removal of lymph nodes and collection of a tissue sample to evaluate for signs of cancer
