June Ambassador: ‘Everyone deserves to see a smiling face to get them through hard times’

Madison Kuhner, RN, Critical Care
June 2, 2025 -- During the holidays, Madison Kuhner likes to volunteer her time to help the homeless in Richmond, serving meals and making gift bags.
"I started to do it because not everyone has a person in their life. Even if they made bad decisions, I feel it shouldn't change how they spend their holidays," she said.
"I feel during those times everyone deserves to see a
smiling face to get them through hard times."
Reid Health's Ambassador for the month of June brings that
same thoughtfulness and compassion to her role as an RN in the Critical Care
Unit (CCU).
"The part I enjoy the most is seeing my super-sick patients
get better and get to downgrade to other units. It's seeing their family's
faces light up when we're able to extubate them and advance their diets and get
them better to go home," Kuhner said.
"I love knowing I make a difference in someone's life every
single day, being the support system they deserve in times when their
families can't be there for their loved ones."
Co-workers say Kuhner's willingness to help in any way she
can lifts the spirits of the entire team.
"Madison is always upbeat and ready to help with a smile,"
one person said. "Her positive energy is truly contagious and makes a
noticeable impact on both patients and co-workers. She consistently goes out of
her way to support others, whether it's jumping in to help a teammate or
stepping up when extra coverage is needed."
"Madison is not only a joy to work with, but she's also
incredibly detail-oriented and provides excellent care to her patients,"
another co-worker said. "When she's on shift, the day feels lighter, more fun,
and better supported. She's a perfect example of what it means to be a team
player and a strong ambassador for our culture."

A Richmond native, Kuhner has been at Reid for five years,
working her way from an aide position at the hospital to her current role.
"I think it's a great place to work. Everyone is so kind
and helpful and being able to take care of the community I grew up in is
something I treasure the most," she said.
"I love working here, I think the culture is great and they
truly do support the community here, especially in CCU. It's always such a
positive environment and everyone is always willing to help one another have a
better day."
When she's not working, Kuhner loves to read, travel, walk
her dog, go shopping, and run in the Wayne County Challenge 5K race series.
"I truly think every nurse was made to be a nurse. It doesn't
matter the struggle or hardships they faced," she said.
"I'm certainly glad I'm able to do this profession and make a difference in every one of my patients' lives."
