September Ambassador helps other nurses who are following in her footsteps
Demie Joy Narag, RN, Nursing 5 North
Sept. 9, 2022 -- Four years ago, Demie Joy Narag found herself working as a contract nurse at a new hospital in a new country, thousands of miles from her home in the Philippines. The adjustment was a challenge, one she worked hard to overcome, her colleagues say.
Now, she helps others who are walking the same path as they too arrive at Reid Health. It's just one of the things that made her the choice as the health system's September Ambassador.
"Coming to a new country and starting a new career wasn't easy, but Demie quickly learned the skills needed to be a successful bedside nurse," a co-worker said. "She works diligently with our other contract nurses to help them succeed inside and outside the organization. She has reached out to help them with where to go for groceries, how to get vehicles, and the ins and outs of getting established within the Richmond community.
"She also serves as a preceptor for our new hires and makes sure they have what they need to be successful bedside nurses."
Born in Pagadian City in the southern area of the Philippines, Narag worked for four years at a hospital in her native country before coming to the United States and Reid Health. When her initial contract ran out earlier this year, Narag, an RN, decided to remain with Reid's 5 North nursing team as an official Reid employee.
"I find joy seeing my patients recovering and healing under my care," she said. "I enjoy having good relationships with my co-workers. They make me feel like I belong. They accepted me and guided me, helping me to thrive and feel at home."
"When someone needs me and I can help them, that gives me a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Being in healthcare, I get to be mindful not just of my own well-being but also the well-being of the people that matter to me." -- Demie Joy Narag, RN
Narag's colleagues point to her caring nature and her willingness to step in and lend a hand whenever it's needed.
"Demie is always smiling and has a great attitude," one co-worker said. "She tries to always see the positive in things. She truly cares about her patients, and she is always eager to help others."
"She is such a blessing to our unit and to all of Reid," another colleague said. "Demie is a hard worker and a great teammate. I'm thankful she's on our 5 North team."
When she's not working, Narag loves to cook and sing for fun. She also enjoys watching movies, shopping, spending time outdoors, and traveling.
