Medical Monday: Fall prevention can help avoid injury
Aug. 28, 2024 -- Indiana residents ages 65 and older experience the most injuries from unintentional falls.
One in four older
adults will fall this year, but common falls aren't considered a normal part of
aging. Many are preventable.
Preventing
falls is the topic of discussion for September's Medical Monday and Thriving
Thursday. Matthew Wright, Reid Health's Exercise Specialist, will discuss how
to lessen the potential for fall risks.
Wright is a certified
fall prevention instructor and leads Fall Prevention, Reid's progressive
exercise program designed to improve an individual's balance and daily life.
Additionally, this
month's Community Benefit Spotlight guests for Medical Monday are from Firefly
Children and Family Alliance to talk about their services. Firefly helps
families and children to overcome hardships and unhealthy behaviors to
strengthen communities.
Medical Monday
is at 1 p.m. on Sept. 9 at Central United Methodist Church, 1425 E. Main St. in
Richmond.
Thriving
Thursday is at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 12 in Connersville at the Fayette County
Senior Center, 477 N. Grand Ave.
Both events are
free to attend. To register, call Sharrie Harlin at (765) 983-3000, ext. 4676.
Medical Monday
and Thriving Thursday are supported by Reid Health Community Benefit. Harlin
started Medical Monday when she worked for the Minority Health Coalition and
maintained it after joining Reid Health. The events have loyal followings,
averaging 40 to 50 guests each month to learn about various health issues,
community programs, and health screenings.
