Reid Health patients now have a personal assistant available to them 24/7, ready to help with questions about their care.

Reid today became the second health system across the country to launch Emmie, a digital assistant powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

Emmie gives patients a secure, conversational way to get answers about their health information and guidance about actions like scheduling an appointment, drawing directly from the context of the patient’s medical records.

With Emmie, a patient can ask questions like "What did my doctor say about my blood pressure at my last visit?”, "What does this test result mean?”, or “How do I schedule my annual physical?” and receive immediate, personalized responses and next steps that are specific to them.

Emmie was built from the ground up for a healthcare setting, designed to reflect the sensitivity and importance of the information it handles.

“For years, we’ve all dealt with ‘Dr. Google.’ Now we are moving into the era of ‘Dr. ChatGPT.’ Patients are showing up with answers shaped by AI, not just search results. That’s a real change,” said Muhammad Siddiqui, Vice President/Chief Information Officer at Reid.

“Free online versions of AI can be helpful, but it can also sound certain when it’s actually incomplete or wrong. If patients are going to use AI, we should help make that experience safer, more useful, and more connected to their actual care. Tools like Emmie do that inside the health system experience, where the information is protected and can be tied back to the patient’s chart and the care team.”

Emmie was developed by Epic, Reid’s electronic health records provider and the creator of MyChart — the technology behind MyReid.

Before launching Emmie to patients, Reid employees participated in an early adopter program to give both Reid and Epic a chance to incorporate feedback and refine the experience. The assistant is available on the MyReid app.

“Congratulations to everyone at Reid Health for their leadership on this initiative," said Trevor Berceau, Director of Patient Experience at Epic. "Emmie will make it easier than ever for patients to understand their health information and manage their healthcare. We're excited to see its positive impact on patients and care teams."

Patient privacy and data security remain paramount: Emmie operates within the existing security framework of MyReid and Epic's platform, and no health information is shared outside the patient's established care relationship.

To access Emmie, MyReid and MyChart users can log in to their account, go to Account Settings, and enable the Preview Features toggle. Emmie is currently available in English.
