When it comes to treating someone experiencing a stroke, we know “time is brain” – the faster a patient can get to a certified stroke center, the faster the patient will be diagnosed and treated, the more likely it is to successfully decrease complications.

Residents in Wayne and Fayette counties can take comfort in knowing they have facilities in their backyard that are prepared for just these situations.

Reid Health has received certification from DNV as a Primary Stroke Center and Reid Health Connersville as an Acute Stroke Ready Center, affirming the facilities’ readiness to handle a full range of stroke-related medical problems.

Both designations are based on standards set by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association.

As a Primary Stroke Center, Reid Health has demonstrated its team is equipped to address the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and education – and has established clear metrics to evaluate outcomes.

“Everyone who is part of our stroke team is dedicated to ensuring our patients get the very best care possible as quickly as possible,” said Misti Foust-Cofield, Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer for Reid Health. “All of them work incredibly hard to ensure the health and safety of our patients during and after an event.

“We’re proud of everything they’ve done to make this program into a nationally recognized leader in providing high-quality care.”

According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is a leading cause of death – killing nearly 130,000 people each year – and is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. Because stroke or “brain attack” affects blood flow to the brain, rapid and effective treatment can save lives and provide the best chance of limiting the extent of long-term damage.

For Fayette County, having an Acute Stroke Ready-certified program in a rural community means patients can get the critical care they need when a larger, more-equipped hospital is far away and every minute is precious.

“Having an Acute Stroke Ready Center close to home can make all the difference in a patient’s recovery and long-term outcomes,” said Jordan Raynor, MD, Reid neurologist and Stroke Medical Director.

“When a stroke occurs, every second counts, and this certification means the community doesn’t have to worry about whether the care they need is within reach – it’s right here.”

As an Acute Stroke Ready facility, Reid Health Connersville has proven its readiness to address the initial diagnosis and treatment of a stroke and its ability to facilitate a quick transfer to a specialized stroke center when a higher level of care is necessary.

“Achieving these certifications shows a commitment to excellence,” said Kelly Proctor, President of DNV Healthcare USA Inc. “They help demonstrate to your community you’re providing the highest level of care this hospital is designed to offer.”
