August Ambassador: 'Caring for others has greater effects than we could ever know'

Brent Morrison joined the U.S. Air Force after high school, eager to see the world and create new opportunities for himself.

Over the next eight years, he provided respiratory and cardiac care to military members, retirees, and their families as a cardiopulmonary technologist.

The Air Force instilled certain core values in him – integrity, servitude, and excellence – values that have carried over to his career as a sonographer at Reid Health.

“Reid’s core values also feature integrity and excellence, along with empathy and accountability,” Morrison said. “I believe the understanding of service to a mission greater than yourself can be translated into empathy for our patients.

“Caring for others has greater effects than we could ever know.”

Reid’s Ambassador for the month of August grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, and now lives in Dayton, Ohio. He’s found a professional home at Reid over the past five years.

“The people and culture brought me here and remain why I commute regularly from Dayton,” Morrison said.

“I began my time at Reid as a student. It was a place where I felt supported to learn and grow. I’m grateful for my co-workers, past and present, who’ve shaped me into who I am today.”

Co-workers have nicknamed Morrison “The Professor” for his work with sonography students.

“Brent goes above and beyond every day,” one person said. “He has helped many of our existing sonographers become great techs. The cardiologists often consider him the ‘go to’ when it comes to echocardiography knowledge.”

“Brent consistently puts his patients first and demonstrates genuine compassion in every interaction,” another colleague said. “He’s always willing to contribute to department projects and to building up morale.”

Morrison loves being a clinical instructor and the opportunity it gives him to make Reid a supportive learning environment for students.

“Sonographers work primarily independently, and that level of responsibility requires a strong combination of competency and skill,” he said. “Teaching new sonographers how to scan along with all the intricacies of the cardiovascular system is my favorite part of my position.”

When he’s not working, Morrison enjoys playing sand volleyball, watching his two sons – Gage and Ledger – play sports, working out at home, and trying new food with his wife, Megan.

He also continues to honor veterans by raising money and volunteering with friends and family to lay wreaths on headstones at Dayton National Cemetery during the holiday season each year.

“Brent is a hard worker and is professional at all times,” a co-worker said. “I can’t think of anyone more deserving than him. He’s awesome!”
