Fallproof™ training program
Decrease risk of falling with the Fallproof™ training program.
Did you know if you are age 65 or older, you have up to a 50% risk of falling? Falls are the leading cause of injury in older adults – but they are preventable, and the professionals at Reid Rehab Services in Richmond, IN want to show you how.
If you are unsteady on your feet, are afraid of falling, or you have fallen once or more in the past year, you are a perfect candidate for the Fallproof™ program, according to Reid officials.
Recent studies have shown that most individuals who are at risk of falling can be helped through balance and mobility retraining. This type of initiative not only reestablishes balance, but helps to maintain it as well, explained Fallproof™ instructor Darcy Garno.
Garno is the only instructor in Indiana who is certified to teach Fallproof™, a program based on the model developed at the Center for Successful Aging at California State University, Fullerton. In fact, Debra Rose, PhD, Co-Director of the Center for Successful Aging at Cal State stresses that, “Regular participation in physical activity is not only integral to the maintenance of good health and independence in older (adults) but will also lower the risk for falls and fall-related injuries. Conversely, physical inactivity doubles the risk of developing a disability that will adversely affect mobility as well as the ability to perform even the most basic activities of daily life.”
In short, regular activity enhances balance and leads to more and better movement, she explains. In conjunction with those findings, participants in the Fallproof™ program are taught to:
- Improve their seated and standing posture;
- Improve their walking ability;
- Learn strategies to improve their ability to recover from a loss of balance; and,
- Increase confidence when completing physical activities of daily living.
The classes feature a structured and progressive exercise program designed to improve balance and mobility. Fallproof™ also offers pre- and post-program balance assessments so that individual needs can be identified and progress can be charted.
FallProof™ classes take place twice a week for twelve weeks. Participants need a medical clearance signed by their physician, according to program organizers. The cost of the 12-week program is $240, which can be paid in one payment, or $120 at the first class and $120 at the fifth class. This is a self-pay class.
